Timor-Leste Recognizes Taiwan as Part of China

BEIJING, www.news-viptv.com – Timor-Leste reaffirmed its firm adherence to the one-China principle, and acknowledged that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China.

This affirmation of Timor-Leste was conveyed by the leaders of the two countries, namely President Jose Ramos-Horta and President Xi Jinping, on Monday (29/7/2024) in the Joint Statement between the People’s Republic of China and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste on Strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“Timor-Leste reiterated its firm unequivocal adherence to the one-China principle, recognized that there is but one China in the world, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole lawful government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. Timor-Leste is opposed to any form of “Taiwan independence,” will not establish any form of diplomatic relationship or conduct any form of official contacts with Taiwan, and supports all the efforts of the Chinese government to realize national reunification. China reiterated its firm support for the people of Timor-Leste in choosing the development path best suited to its national circumstances, and for Timor-Leste’s efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests, and opposes any external interference in Timor-Leste’s internal affairs.

Ramos-Horta began his state visit to China on July 28-31, 2024. This marks the first state visit by the Head of State of Timor-Leste since the restoration of independence in May 2002.

During the visit, Ramos-Horta and Xi Jinping looked friendly and very friendly in their meeting. The two leaders had an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations, regional and international issues of mutual interest and reached a broad consensus of importance.

The two sides have also signed a Cooperation Plan between the Government of China and the Government of Timor-Leste on Jointly Promoting the Belt and Road Initiative, and cooperation documents in areas such as agriculture, civil air transportation, digital economy, green development, infrastructure, GDI implementation, radio and television, media and public culture.

The two countries will advance their development strategies by deepening cooperation in four key areas: industrial revitalization, infrastructure development, food security, and livelihood improvement. The Chinese side is ready to strengthen cooperation with Timor-Leste in areas such as trade and investment, agriculture and fisheries, health, water conservancy, energy, education and poverty alleviation, expand cooperation in the fields of tourism, digital economy, green development and help Timor-Leste to achieve independent and sustainable development.

China commends Timor-Leste for continuing to advance national rejuvenation and development over the past 22 years and the important achievements it has achieved in economic development and livelihood improvement. China believes that Timor-Leste is in a good position to accelerate national development and expresses its willingness to continue providing assistance to support Timor-Leste’s social and economic progress.

China also congratulated Timor-Leste on its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), including giving full support for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.

China and Timor-Leste also support the role of the United Nations in playing a central role in maintaining world peace, promoting common development and advancing international cooperation, and will strengthen mutual support in international affairs. Including China is ready to support the G7+ initiated by Timor-Leste to play a greater role in international affairs.

The Chinese side is also ready to enhance cooperation in disaster prevention and mitigation with Timor-Leste and provide the best possible assistance to Timor-Leste in tackling climate change.
