DILI, Timor-Leste’s entry into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is drawing growing international attention, with investors from Hong Kong expressing interest in exploring investment opportunities in the country, particularly in infrastructure development.

The interest reflects potential opportunities for investment as Timor-Leste seeks to strengthen its economy, improve public infrastructure, and expand its role in the Southeast Asian region following its ASEAN membership.

The Hong Kong investors conveyed their interest during a meeting with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace in Dili on Tuesday (20 October 2026).

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, accompanied by Minister of Public Works Samuel Marçal, took the business representatives on a field visit to inspect locations being considered for potential investment.

The visit formed part of the initial assessment process, allowing the investors to observe the conditions and development potential of the identified sites directly, particularly those intended for infrastructure projects.

The interest expressed by the Hong Kong investors signals a potential opportunity to expand international business engagement with Timor-Leste. However, further assessments and discussions will be necessary to determine the feasibility, scope, and implementation of any proposed investment projects.
