Ramos Horta Will be present at the opening of the 2022 Web Summit

DILI, www.news-viptv.com – The President of Timor-Leste, Jose Ramos-Horta during his state visit to Portugal, is certain to attend the opening of the 2022 web summit which will take place in Lisbon.

Ramos-Horta has departed from Dili, Timor-Leste to make his state visit to Portugal from 29 October to 4 November. The visit is done, related to the invitation from his counterpart President of the Republic of Portugal, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

In the context of the visit, President of Republic will participate in the opening of Web Summit 22, one of the most important technological events in the world, with seventy thousand participants, including leaders, scientists, start-ups and others.

“The conference focuses on the internet technology, the new technologies and the benefits of capitalism which Timor-Leste needs the most for following closely and understanding the latest developments in the global level,” the Head of State said further.

With this visit, President José Ramos-Horta reaffirms his personal commitment and the commitment of the people of Timor-Leste to further develop the ties of friendship, solidarity and partnership between Portugal and Timor-Leste, showing confidence and trust that the relations between the two nations continues to grow even further in the future.

The visit is to strengthen and further foster the bilateral relations and partnership between the two countries, at a particularly unpredictable time today, it is caused, above all, by the war in Ukraine and the world economic crises, and also taking the opportunity to talk with his counterpart on the latest social, political and economic development in Timor-Leste, particularly the legislative elections which will be held in 2023.

“The relationship between Timor-Leste and Portugal is not only seen from the aspects of culture, common language, long decades of the struggle for the national self-determination, but also seen from the commitment and the dedication of Portuguese people, leaders from various political background, the difficult moment until this present day, in development for the well-being of Timorese people. Today, Portugal continues to place itself as an important partner for the priority of the development programs for the state building and the development of Timor-Leste,” President José Ramos-Horta affirmed before leaving for the first state visit to European continent.

President also would like to touch quickly on the dramatic situation, particularly the vulnerability faced by the recent arrived Timorese in Portugal.

“I appeal to my compatriots to inform the authorities on the condition of their departure, not only to Portugal but also to other foreign countries. I continue by saying that the exemption of entry visa of European Union countries only serves for touristic purposes. If the objective of the Timorese is to leave for seeking jobs, firstly, they should fulfill all the necessary requirements in order to avoid illegal immigration, human trafficking and being exploited,” stressed the Head of State.

Timor-Leste, being a country with 60% of its population who are young, should not avoid the development of technology, particularly the artificial intelligence,” affirmed President of Republic.

Within the official meetings, there will be a solemn session scheduled with the ambassadors from CPLP, and there will be the participation in a round table discussion organized by G7+ – President of Republic will be the keynote speaker. In other events, President of Republic will participate in the business event which will count on the participation of Timorese and Portuguese businessmen and women in areas of pharmacy, fashion, agriculture and shoes.

“The accession of Timor-Leste to ASEAN, with the market of seven million people will be an ideal opportunity for Portuguese industries in the specialized areas to be established in Timor-Leste,” said President of Republic.
