Dili, wwwnews-viptv.com, October 23, 2026 — Timor-Leste’s FRETILIN party has called for stronger attention to electoral transparency and integrity as the country prepares for its 2027 presidential election, following a meeting between party leader Dr. Mari Alkatiri and a European Union (EU) delegation in Dili.
Alkatiri, FRETILIN’s Secretary-General and Interim President, met with the EU delegation at CCF Fatuhada on October 23 to discuss preparations for the upcoming presidential election and the possibility of deploying an EU Election Observation Mission.
The discussions focused on campaign finance transparency, the implementation of recommendations from previous EU election observation missions, and measures to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
FRETILIN expressed concern over the implementation of earlier recommendations, particularly those concerning campaign financing and electoral transparency. The party reaffirmed that electoral integrity must remain a priority to ensure credible elections and strengthen democratic institutions.
The meeting also addressed broader governance issues, including judicial independence, corruption and the country’s political environment.
FRETILIN Calls for EU Observers in 2028
Beyond the 2027 presidential election, FRETILIN called on the European Union to consider deploying an Election Observation Mission for Timor-Leste’s 2028 parliamentary elections.
The party said electoral observation could contribute to greater transparency, accountability and public trust in democratic institutions.
The request comes as Timor-Leste continues efforts to strengthen its democratic processes and address recommendations arising from previous election observation missions.
EU Delegation Meets FRETILIN Leadership
The EU delegation was led by Andrea Rossi, a political officer responsible for democracy and election observation at the European External Action Service (EEAS), accompanied by Christoph Sorg, Deputy Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Timor-Leste.
Other delegation members included experts and consultants working in political affairs, elections, legal matters, logistics and security.
Alkatiri was accompanied by FRETILIN Deputy Secretaries-General José Reis and Flávio da Silva, as well as Central Committee members Miguel Pereira de Carvalho and Edio José Maria Guterres.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on electoral preparations and democratic governance in Timor-Leste.
With the 2027 presidential election approaching and parliamentary elections scheduled for 2028, transparency in campaign financing, effective implementation of electoral recommendations and respect for democratic principles remain central issues in efforts to strengthen public confidence in the country’s electoral institutions.
